I used to want to be a Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy briefly when I was young.

It seemed like such an important and exciting role. But now, I realize that there are so many different paths in life, and what we think we want at one point can change as we grow and learn.

What Is A Petty Officer In The U.S. Navy?

Let’s start by what a Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy is, huh? A Petty Officer is a non-commissioned officer rank, and there are a total of three levels:

  • Petty Officer Third Class
  • Petty Officer Second Class, and
  • Petty Officer First Class.

If I say it simply then a petty officer are those who are responsible for supervising and managing enlisted personnel, maintaining discipline, and ensuring the smooth operation of their assigned units.

You may have seen petty officers in various roles on naval vessels or bases, such as leading small teams, maintaining equipment, and providing guidance to junior enlisted personnel. Remember?

Role of a Petty Officer

When you ask a normal person about the role of a Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy, they might not have a clear idea. But let me tell you, it’s a crucial position with important responsibilities.

As a Petty Officer, your main role is to lead and manage enlisted personnel under your supervision. Oh, I told you this before.

But do you know that’s not the only responsibility of a Petty Officer? They are also responsible for:

  2. Helping others understand their job better.
  3. If you are at the port, you might be in charge of making sure everything works well during watch hours.
  4. Chiefs often sit on discipline boards suggesting solutions for difficult situations or problem cases.
  5. One more that I know about is that chiefs may partake in planning training too.
  6. Some will need to work closely with other higher-ups to take care of the clinic’s operations.

Actually, it is harder to perform all its responsibilities than becoming an officer.
