HAZMAT Noncommissioned Officer (NCO)

The HAZMAT NCO is responsible for identifying all the hazardous materials required by, stored in, or used within the organization. They actively eliminate unnecessary hazardous materials and develop safeguards to ensure safety. They also acquire personal protective equipment for handling hazardous substances. The HAZMAT NCO maintains a comprehensive library of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all materials. Proper storage of hazardous and flammable substances is one of their key responsibilities. They establish Operating Instructions (OIs) for the safe utilization of hazardous materials and develop procedures to effectively respond to hazardous waste spills, accidents, and emergencies. Furthermore, they collaborate with the Installation Hazardous Waste authority to consolidate requirements and minimize exposure. Lastly, the HAZMAT NCO oversees the proper disposal of hazardous waste.

The role of the HAZMAT NCO extends to training and certifying personnel in the safe storage, transportation, and handling of hazardous items. They diligently label hazardous substances according to the regulations set forth by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The HAZMAT NCO meticulously verifies all paperwork, packaging, labeling, and marking of hazardous materials to ensure compliance. They follow established procedures for loading, unloading, receiving, or forwarding HAZMAT. Additionally, they certify Hazardous Materials as being “safe to transport.” As a subject matter expert, the HAZMAT NCO provides valuable guidance and expertise on HAZMAT-related issues.
