MOS 19D Cavalry Scout Duty Descriptions

19D3O Section Leader

As a Section Leader, you are responsible for the training and tactical deployment of a Scout Section in combat. Your duties include overseeing the individual and crew-served weapons of the section and maintaining the assigned vehicles and equipment. You will manage reconnaissance missions, such as scouting fording sites, tunnels, and bridges. Additionally, you will control movement during route, area, and zone reconnaissance by evaluating terrain, selecting routes, and organizing combat formations. You will supervise the resupply of essential resources for the section and be responsible for identifying, selecting, and issuing fire commands.

CFV GUNNER

Serves as a member of an observation and listening team; gathers and reports information on terrain features, enemy strength, disposition, and equipment; loads, cleans, and fires crew-served weapons; identifies targets; requests and adjusts indirect fire; operates wheeled and tracked vehicles and communication equipment; uses maps, map symbols, and compass for navigation; assists in firing BFV (Bradley Fighting Vehicle) crew-served weapons; performs minor repairs on scout vehicles; applies first aid and sanitation methods; utilizes radiac and chemical detection kits.

INSTRUCTOR/WRITER

Served as a Cavalry Instructor in a One Station Unit Training (OSUT) Cavalry Troop; responsible for the training, health, and welfare of three NCOs and their families; responsible for training, evaluating, and coordinating training events for 165 Initial Entry Training (IET) Cavalry Scouts in over 81 skill level one tasks in three 16-week cycles; maintains the readiness of vehicles and equipment; ensures proper scheduling and utilization of training aids and simulators.

SECTION LEADER

Assigned as a Section Leader to a Scout Platoon in a rapid deployable Airborne Cavalry Squadron deployed in the Republic of Germany; responsible for the health, welfare, and discipline of three NCOs and nine enlisted Soldiers and their families; oversees the maintenance, accountability, and combat readiness of three High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs) and all assigned weapons and equipment; assumes the duties of the Platoon Sergeant in their absence.

AIRBORNE SCOUT TEAM LEADER 19D2P

Served as a Scout Team Leader in an Airborne Reconnaissance, Surveillance & Target Acquisition (RSTA) Troop; responsible for the health, morale, welfare, discipline, individual and collective training, and professional development of four enlisted soldiers; maintains and accounts for one M1151 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) and ancillary equipment worth over $250,000; tactically employs a team in support of platoon and troop operations; collects and reports intelligence; analyzes enemy intelligence for use by the Squadron Commander; ensures the team’s readiness for worldwide deployment as part of the Global Response Force.

TEAM LEADER

Serves as a Team Leader in a Reconnaissance, Surveillance, and Target Acquisition (RSTA) platoon in a Cavalry Squadron assigned to a Battlefield Surveillance Brigade; deployable worldwide; responsible for the health, morale, welfare, discipline, individual and collective training, and professional development of three enlisted Soldiers; also responsible for the maintenance, operational readiness, and accountability of one HMMWV and all assigned equipment valued over $2,000,000.

SECTION LEADER

Serves as a Section Leader in a Motorized Reconnaissance Troop in a Reconnaissance & Surveillance Squadron, assigned to a Battlefield Surveillance Brigade; responsible for the training, morale, and welfare of one NCO and eight Soldiers; accountable for the maintenance, readiness, and accountability of three M1025 HMMWVs and all equipment valued over $5,000,000; supervises the gathering and reporting of intelligence directly to the Troop Commander; assumes the role of Platoon Sergeant in their absence.

PLATOON SERGEANT

Directs the tactical and technical training and deployment of a reconnaissance Platoon assigned to a Scout Troop within a Reconnaissance Squadron; responsible for the health, morale, welfare, discipline, individual and collective training, and professional development of four NCOs and 12 Soldiers; also responsible for the operational readiness, maintenance, and accountability of all assigned vehicles and Basic Issue Items (BII) valued over $8,000,000.

OPERATIONS NCO

Serves as an Operations NCO in a rapidly deployable Reconnaissance and Surveillance Troop assigned to the 504th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade (BFSB); responsible for executing the commander’s plans and programs to accomplish the troop’s missions; accountable for the health, welfare, accountability, morale, discipline, and professional development of eleven Soldiers; supervises the maintenance of eight tactical vehicles and organic equipment valued over $4,000,000.

FIRST SERGEANT

Serves as a First Sergeant within a deployable Reconnaissance and Surveillance Squadron; capable of short-notice deployments to support combat operations worldwide, providing reconnaissance, surveillance, and intelligence assets to combatant commanders; responsible for the health, welfare, accountability, morale, discipline, professional development, individual and collective training of 55 Soldiers, including 15 NCOs; provides recommendations to the Troop Commander on daily operations and leader development; oversees maintenance, accountability, and employment of tactical vehicles and equipment worth over $11,000,000.

19D4O PLATOON SERGEANT

Serves as a Platoon Sergeant in a Light Cavalry Troop supporting an Infantry Brigade Combat Team; responsible for the training, morale, and welfare of four NCOs and 20 Soldiers and their families; advises the Platoon Leader on squadron and troop operating procedures, policies, training, administrative actions, and enlisted matters; assumes the Platoon Leader’s duties in their absence; responsible for the maintenance, accountability, and combat readiness of six HMMWVs and all assigned equipment valued over $8 million.

Senior Scout/Section Leader

As a Senior Scout/Section Leader in a Motorized Reconnaissance Troop within a Reconnaissance & Surveillance Squadron assigned to a Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, your responsibilities are diverse and critical. You are responsible for the training, morale, and welfare of two NCOs and eight Soldiers. Additionally, you have the important duty of ensuring the maintenance, accountability, and readiness of four M1114 and three M1165 HMMWVs, as well as all associated equipment valued at over $5,000,000. In the absence of the platoon sergeant, you serve as the acting platoon sergeant, shouldering additional responsibilities.

TAC Stryker Gunner

As a Stryker Gunner in a Reconnaissance, Surveillance, and Target Acquisition (RSTA) Squadron assigned to a Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT), your role is crucial in ensuring the readiness and effectiveness of the team. You are responsible for the training, discipline, health, welfare, morale, professional development, and combat readiness of four enlisted Soldiers. Additionally, you supervise the maintenance and supply accountability of one M1130 Stryker Command Vehicle and associated section MTOE equipment valued at over $2,000,000. Working closely with the Section Leader, you assist in preparing and conducting training activities while ensuring the section is fully prepared for worldwide deployment within 96 hours.

19D4O Platoon Sergeant (TRADOC)

As a Scout Platoon Sergeant in an Armored Cavalry Troop, your primary responsibilities extend beyond the regular duties within a traditional platoon. You are responsible for the discipline, training, morale, health, and welfare of three Staff Sergeants, two Sergeants, five Soldiers, and their families. Your role is pivotal in providing combat-ready Soldiers, vehicles, and equipment to the United States Army Armor School. This involves supporting various Program of Instruction (POI) courses such as the Armor Basic Officer Leaders Course, Master Gunner Course, Army Reconnaissance Course, and Tank Commanders Course. Additionally, you oversee daily administrative operations and the effective deployment of the platoon.

19D3O Section Leader (TRADOC)

As a Section Leader in an Armored Cavalry Troop, your responsibilities encompass the discipline, training, morale, health, and welfare of one Staff Sergeant, one Sergeant, two Soldiers, and their families. Similar to the Platoon Sergeant, you play a critical role in providing combat-ready Soldiers, vehicles, and equipment to the United States Army Armor School. Section Leader

You are responsible for the health, welfare, and training of six Cavalry Scouts. Furthermore, you oversee the maintenance and accountability of two M1025 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs) and ancillary equipment valued at over $240,000. Tactically employing your Scout Team in support of Troop operations, you collect and report intelligence during operations and analyze enemy intelligence for use by the Troop Commander. You ensure that your team is always prepared to deploy within 18 hours, anywhere in the world.

Scout Team Leader

As a Scout Team Leader attached to a specific unit deployed to Central Iraq, you played a crucial role in conducting route clearance operations in support of Operation New Dawn. You were responsible for the accountability, sensitive items, health, welfare, discipline, training, and professional development of three Soldiers. Additionally, you were responsible for the maintenance, accountability, and mission readiness of one MRAP (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicle and one Husky route clearance vehicle, along with all their components and associated organizational equipment valued at over $1.1 million.

19D3O Section Leader/Squad Leader

In the role of a Section Leader/Squad Leader, you had the responsibility of supervising a scout squad, CFV (Cavalry Fighting Vehicle) crew, and M551A1 crew. Your duties included overseeing the operator maintenance of tracked and wheeled scout vehicles, as well as individual crew-served weapons. You were responsible for selecting, organizing, and supervising the operation of observation and listening posts, as well as scout recovery operations. Training the scout squad and supervising the request, storage, and issue of ammunition were also part of your responsibilities. 19D30 Section Leader

19D40 Platoon Sergeant

As a Platoon Sergeant in the only Heavy Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Army, your responsibilities were extensive. You were responsible for the training, morale, and welfare of nine NCOs and 20 Soldiers. Additionally, you had the critical duty of ensuring the maintenance, accountability, and readiness of six M3A3 Cavalry Fighting Vehicles and all assigned equipment valued at over $18 million. You played a key role in advising the Scout Platoon Leader on squadron and troop operating procedures, policies, training, administrative actions, and enlisted matters. Your coordination and execution of the commander’s intent and guidance were vital to the success of the platoon.

19D20 Squad Leader

As a Squad Leader in a Cavalry Troop deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom 08-09, and later in a garrison environment, you demonstrated your leadership abilities in planning and executing squad and individual missions. Your responsibilities included the discipline, morale, welfare, family sustainment, and professional growth of six Soldiers. Furthermore, you were accountable for the maintenance, accountability, and mission readiness of two M1151 HMMWVs, including all components and associated organizational equipment valued at over $350,000.

19D3O Cavalry Scout Section Leader SSG/E6

As a Cavalry Scout Section Leader, your role was critical in supporting combat and contingency operations. You were responsible for the discipline, training, morale, health, welfare, and tactical deployment of a Scout Section consisting of 6 to 10 personnel. Daily administrative operations fell under your purview, and in the absence of the Platoon Sergeant, you assumed their duties. Your responsibilities extended to all assigned equipment and sub-components, including individual, squad, and section equipment. Additionally, you ensured the maintenance and mission readiness of the assigned M3A3 Cavalry Fighting Vehicle (CFV) and M1025/M1026 HMMWV (Highly Mobile Multi-Wheeled Vehicle), along with their sub-systems. Collecting battlefield intelligence reports, analyzing reconnaissance information, and supervising reconnaissance operations were part of your role, as well as controlling movement during route/area/zone reconnaissance at the section level and managing section resupply.
